The records in this series document the administration of the Office of Indian Affairs (and later the Bureau of Indian Affairs) educational programs in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and (until 1950) northern California. Those programs included off-reservation boarding schools (especially Chemawa Indian School) and contractual arrangements with the states for the education of Indian children. Among the records are individual student folders that typically include inquiries about enrollment in boarding schools, applications for enrollment, correspondence, and progress reports. Some of the student folders also contain "social histories" compiled by case workers.
